Learning My Mother Tongue as an Adult
Growing up in a multilingual household, I somehow never fully learned to read and write in Tamil, my mother tongue. I could speak it conversationally, but the written word remained a mystery.
This changed when I decided to make a conscious effort to learn Tamil properly as an adult.
Why Now?
There’s something powerful about being able to read literature in its original language. Tamil has a rich literary tradition spanning over 2000 years. I wanted to access that directly, not through translations.
Also, as I get older, I feel a stronger pull toward understanding my cultural heritage more deeply.
The Journey
Learning a new script as an adult is humbling. The Tamil script has 12 vowels, 18 consonants, and 216 compound characters. It felt overwhelming at first.
I started with:
- Basic alphabet apps
- Children’s books (yes, really)
- Writing practice with Tamil script workbooks
- Watching Tamil movies with subtitles
Progress So Far
I can now read simple texts slowly and write basic sentences. It’s still a struggle, but a rewarding one.
The most surprising part has been connecting with family members who only speak Tamil. Conversations have become richer.
